Drinking water, soda, and other beverages
If you’re thirsty, drinking water is the best choice. Water is refreshing. Water is cheap. Water doesn’t have calories. Water doesn’t have added sugars or sodium. It’s truly amazing.
You may have to make a concerted effort to drink water if it’s not part of your normal routine. Keep a water bottle at your desk at work and one in your gym bag. Water bottles come in beautiful colors and fabulous designs to make carrying and drinking from them more fun.
The tap is the most abundant source of water in America. Yet, that shouldn’t stop you from trying different kinds like sparkling water. The bubbles in San Pellegrino or Perrier may keep you drinking.
Drink flavored waters or fitness waters in moderation because they may contain added sugars, sodium, and other ingredients. Always check the label to see which nutrients and ingredients are included.
If you like some flavor in your water, add a slice of lemon, lime, or orange. How about raspberries or mint if you’re feeling bold?
Plain coffee and tea can also be part of a healthy meal plan. Some studies have shown a benefit in drinking coffee to prevent type 2 diabetes; other studies have not. Enjoy your cup of joe in moderation, just like any other food or drink. Try to avoid adding cream, sugar, syrups, or flavors because they may have added sugars and excess calories.
Drinking a glass of low-fat or fat-free milk can also be a nutritious quencher. Try to avoid fruit and vegetable juices with added sugars or lots of sodium.
Too much soda is bad for your health because it has added sugars. Limit added sugars because, in addition to affecting your blood glucose levels, they fill you up and can deter you from eating nutritious foods. Try to drink water instead of soda.
The American Diabetes Association recommends that people with type 2 diabetes drink sugar-free and calorie-free drinks including water and unsweetened coffee and tea.
